When I lived in Germany Saint Nicholas came to our house. I was newly married, at 23, and outside of our door, on December 6, was a special basket filled with treats. I’ll never forget it because it’s so nice to be surprised. I think European Christmases are the most lovely of all; they seem to have escaped the materialism running so rampant in America.
You are so right about the materialism – I do my best to avoid it…
I guess it is a very German thing – St. Nicholas visiting on the 6th. I wonder who put the basket at your door? I would imagine, if you were a little homesick, that it was a very nice surprise.
I love coming up with different, little treats for my kids’ stockings. When I went away to school, St. Nick sent me new knee socks stuffed with treats, in the mail. I sure felt loved.
